Our young people come from all over Denmark, from the Faroe Islands and Greenland. And then there are young people from all over the world. From Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and America. About half of the college's students are international, so many languages are spoken in the house.

To attend the college, you must be 16 years old – and not 19 years old – on the day the college course starts. International students must be 16 and a half years old when the course starts. Most students attend the college for a full year, and therefore also have time to celebrate their birthdays while they are here. Approximately one third of the students are 16 years old, one third are 17 years old and the last third are 18 years old when we start in the autumn. A few students reach the age of 19 while attending the college.

During all weekends during your stay at the college, you choose whether you want to stay at the college or go home. The college is open from the start of school until the end, so you can be here on all weekends and during spring holidays such as Easter and Whitsun. On weekends, it is typically quieter and much more cozy – so it is also great to experience while you are here.

If you have an important appointment at home – such as a birthday party or a dentist appointment – you agree with your tutor how you can get time off for it.

Yes, you can. On weekends you can have one or two guests visit. You are the host and take care of your guests within the framework of the college. The first month of each course we do not have guests because we have to get to know each other first.

Folk High School's courses begin at the beginning of August and at the beginning of January. We have ongoing enrollment, so if you drop out of your school, for example, you can start at the college when a course has started. Call or write to find out what is possible.

The most important thing is not so much where in the country the college is located, but what actually happens at the college while you are here. Folk High School is located near Ribe because it was built as an after-school school close to the border with Germany. The border has moved south and today the whole world comes to the college. Ribe is Denmark's oldest city with lots of Viking history. And we live only one kilometer from the Wadden Sea with the most beautiful sunsets.

Yes. You choose your subjects yourself. Over the course of six months, there are four periods with different subjects. Some subjects only last a single period while others are continuous. A period is approximately one month long. You can see much more about our subjects under the “Subjects” tab.

At a college, the teaching is not at all like you know it from school. Here you choose your subjects yourself and based on what you want. It could be, for example, Sports or Jewelry Design, just to name two options. When you go to a subject, you have to do something that you have chosen yourself and that you think is fun to do. And there are no grades or exams, so you can relax and concentrate on getting exactly what you want out of the subjects. Of course, we expect you to participate in the subjects, the meals, the practical tasks, the meetings and the fun while you are at college.

Folk High Schooln kitchen is super attentive to all dietary considerations. If your finances are a bit tight, we can help you apply for a grant or scholarship, because unfortunately, attending a college is not free. On the other hand, “rent”, all your food, course materials and trips out of the house – including the study trip – are all covered by the payment. So it is not expensive to go here either. Call us and ask about the options – we would like to help you get to college.

Yes. Completely ordinary and very different young people choose to go to college. You can be academically talented or have a really hard time with school. You can be healthy and fit or have challenges or diagnoses. You can be clear about your future and education or you can be completely confused. Everyone is welcome here. And it is precisely in the encounter with other young people who are not exactly like yourself that you develop and your world becomes bigger.
