THE SEABED RACE

All 19 participants from Ungdomshøjskolen did the race well!

The Seabed Race is a very special race where you run across the seabed from the Wadden Sea island of Mandø to the Wadden Sea Centre in Vester Vedsted. It is held once a year, and the date of the race is determined by the tide.

The race starts at 19 p.m. from the town on the smallest Wadden Sea island, Mandø. The route goes across the island and before the runners reach the seabed, they cross the sea dike on the northeastern side of Mandø. Then follows 5 km over the seabed. Often in up to 20 cm of water, but this year the depth reached one meter in some places, so the race was run in challenging conditions. The last part of the seabed section follows Ebbevejen, which hits the coast off Vester Vedsted. The runners finally have 2 km on a paved road behind the dike until they reach the finish area at the Wadden Sea Center. The race is 11 km in total.

This year, 17 students and 2 teachers from the Youth College participated in the race – and all of them finished. For men in the age group 16-19, our student Yann came in first, and for women in the same age group, our student Lily came in second. It was also high school students who took the last places, as Mathilde and Andrew finished well as the last runners.

In addition to the runners, many students and staff turned out on the dike, on a windy and cool evening, to cheer all runners to the finish line. A small group persevered and also cheered the last of their college friends ashore.

Great effort from everyone! As the next day you can probably feel the hardships in your body...
