My son developed and became more independent

The stay at the Youth College was the first course my son had completed in a long time. His independence and self-belief grew among like-minded students and a genuine interest and understanding from the teachers.

I had heard of several young people who had had a completely positive and clarifying experience at Ribe Youth Folk High School. After a long and difficult period of lacking the courage to start something new, I sincerely wished for my son that he would start a stay at a folk high school – right here. We agreed to go on a non-binding tour of Ribe Youth Folk High School.

Was met with empathy and recognition

The first meeting with a teacher at school made the difference for my son. Insecurity and reticence were met with understanding and recognized as completely natural – and from that meeting it became clear to my son that here was room to dare to show more of himself, room to develop and regain faith in himself and others.

Permanent contact teacher provided security

With the teacher's great empathy, insight and persistence in the contact, it was a great security for my son to have him as a contact person and mentor. The learning process was graduated and adapted to my son's skills and needs - far more than I had dared to hope possible.

More independent and persistent

The sparring sessions he and the regular teacher have had have created space for development and increased endurance and independence. Because of the relationship with the contact teacher, like-minded students and the entire school's values and atmosphere, it was the first course in several years that my son has completed outside among others.

I have received professional sparring.

As a parent on the sidelines, it has been incredibly rewarding and safe to be listened to. I have received answers and sparring if I have had questions or been unsure. This collaboration has given me clarity and insight. And it has meant that I have been able to “let go” and break inappropriate patterns, which in turn has created a healthier relationship between my son and me.

Genuine interest in young people

It has been deeply moving to feel the heart, the passionate effort, and the genuine interest in the well-being and development of the young people that the teachers invest in each individual student. It was crucial to my son's success and growth during his stay.

I give Folk High School my warmest recommendations – thank you very much to all the employees.

Kind regards, Mother

An investment in our son

As a teenager, Rasmus was a gifted troublemaker, but a school-weary teenager who gave his parents a headache. What could they do?

Why did you send your teenager to junior college?

It was simply about survival. We had a school-weary teenager who didn't really know what he wanted, but he knew what he didn't want. For example, he didn't want to go to a production school. In addition, jobs for a young unskilled worker didn't hang on trees.

How did you find out about the youth college?

We had a good chat with the youth counselor who told us about the different options, offers and consequences. It was a good starting point for making a decision about whether a stay at a college could be the right choice to survive and at the same time develop as a person. After a good chat with our son, we started searching online.

Rasmus found Ribe Youth Folk High School himself and thought it sounded really exciting that the target group was young people who liked outdoor activities, good nature and the youth college generally spoke to him. So we chose to invest in our son and the stay – and it is one of the best things we have ever done. The youth college has a good handle on young people and attractive teachers who live and breathe for the youth college life and the young people

What has youth college meant to your teenager?

The stay at UHR has meant that our son had a break to think in a different environment than at home with us parents. It was here that he really took an interest in nature and the outdoors. At the same time, the seeds for his vocational education were planted. He discovered how passionate he is about physical activities and the desire to learn.
